Madeline turns 1

Yesterday was Madeline's 1st birthday! Hip hip hooray!!! We made it through the first year. I think it is a pretty incredible thing for a parent to get their kid past their first year. They start out so fragile with a huge potential for disaster (illness, SIDS, older sibling attacks, etc) so when they reach one I breath a sigh of relief.

Madeline has been such a joy this past year. She has always been an exceptionally happy and quiet child. She seriously NEVER cries except on the rare occasion when she is up at 2am and I don't want to get her. She has zero seperation anxiety and in fact she smiles at everyone she meets. Although she usually has a binky in her mouth so our "trick" is to pull the binky out and out pops an adorable killer smile (no teeth and all).

Even though she doesn't have any seperation anxiety she definitely prefers certain people. She ADORES her dad and aunt Candy. When they are around she could care less about mama. Whenever David calls I'll put it on speaker phone and Madeline gets so excited that she leaps for the phone and won't put it down for hours afterward.

For her birthday we had some friends over (the Eckmans and Kimballs) for cake and ice cream. It was a lot of fun. Thank you so much for coming!!

Can anyone guess what this cake is supposed to be? I was going for a binky since she loves binkies, but I don't have mad cake decorating skills like my good friend Tiff Peterson. Both of my girls were pretty timid with their cakes.

Madeline spent more time licking the frosting off the candle then on eating the cake. She does love sugar though and will really enjoy offically being able to have sugar. It was wonderful to celebrate our adorable, smiley, curious Madeline!

Miracle in a snowstorm

I'm home sick from Church this morning, so I thought I would post about an experience we had during the huge snow storm this week. I was going to share this in my talk today, which I didn't get to give. I was also sick two Sundays ago, so I'm sure the ward is wondering why I get sick everytime I have to speak or conduct Sacrament meeting.

On Wednesday evening, the snow storm hit and was so intense that we lost our power by 5 o'clock. The girls were really freaked out about this, and we didn't have an emergency heater, so we thought we should go to Candy and Tony's house (they still had power and an emergency heater in case they lost power too). Bethany thought we could walk, but I was nervous about trudging through that much snow with the girls on our shoulders, so we decided to try to drive. The snow was so bad we didn't even imagine that the car could make it, but we knew we could just shovel enough to push it to the side of the road when it got stuck and walk the rest of the way. We drove only on main roads, which were plowed, but even there the snow was so thick it was a very difficult drive. Our car got stuck once, and there was another turn at the top of a hill that the car almost lost all traction and slid out of control.

We made it alright all the way to the end of Edge Hill, so we came down a slight hill near Jenkintown road, before starting onto Candy's street. The light turned red and we stopped at the intersection. It looked like we were going to make it all the way, until I looked closely at the street we were about to drive on. It had not been plowed, so the snow was almost three feet thick and very slushy. We drive a Hyundai Accent, and I knew our little go-cart car was not going to be able to drive on a road like that. It is a narrow street, too, with lots of cars parked on both sides of the street, so there was also the danger of hitting another car if we slid even a little bit. While we sat at the stop light and I looked at that road, my stomach started to sink, thinking about carrying Angelique and Madeline out in the cold, when we had made it so far, and only had this last stretch of road that turned out to be the most difficult. Just then, my cell phone rang. It was my dad.

I told him how inspired he was to call us right then. He said that Mom had told him to call and ask how we were doing. I explained the situation and asked if he and Mom could stop whatever they were doing and pray for us. He said they would, and I promised we would call as soon as we were safely there. We got off the phone, the light turned green, and we went for it. Our weak, light car should not have been able to do it. But I was able to drive forward with faith, knowing that my mom and dad were praying for us right then. And we made it! When we were finally in front of Candy and Tony's house, I made the slightest turn to go into their driveway and the car got stuck immediately. I couldn't go forward or backward an inch. But it didn't matter! Bethany carried the girls up to the house, while Tony came out and we were able to shovel enough to get the car out of the street.

It is always amazing to see how easily the Lord is able to work miracles through such small things. That phone call from my dad was exactly what I needed in that moment. We were able to drive just far enough to make it. And I think all of this was a tender mercy for Angelique and Madeline. If it had just been Bethany and me, we would have put on some warm clothes and blankets and been fine that night. But Angelique was really afraid because the light switches didn't work. Madeline got scared if we put her down for even one minute. But because we were able to make it in our car, they did not have to face the cold at all and were able to feel comfortable at Candy and Tony's, where they've spent the night several times. So I am even more amazed at how much Heavenly Father is willing to do to comfort two scared little children that He loves very much.

A few updates

Since we use this as a bit of a journal I thought I would post a few updates about everyone:

Madeline- Is almost one and is tons of fun. She crawls around everywhere and is convinced that she is 5. She loves putting things into other things over and over. Her favorite things to hide are her binkies. I recently bought 10 and we are now down to 3. When she sleeps she loves to have one in her mouth and one in each hand. I think it's about time to start weaning her from them :) She is still hairless and toothless, but seems to be growing fine in every other way.

Gigi- She has recently started Gymnastics and loves it! Every day she asks me if she can go to gymnastics today. We have been working on reading with her and she is doing pretty well. She can read a lot of small words like, cat, ant, with, lick, etc... and is finally getting patient enough to enjoy it. Most of her time is spent in her imagination. She LOVES building "homes" and has all of her animals participating. She is really good at entertaining herself as long as her sister doesn't interfere :( We're working on that.

Me- I'm taking a few religion classes. One is with a friend at a local church. We are studying the book of Peter. I am LOVING it! They even have classes for Gigi and Madeline. It has been really nice and I have learned a lot. The other is an institute class for everyone in our stake. We are studying the Book of Mormon and the teacher is fantastic. I feel really blessed to have some time to devote to learning again.

David- He is way busy! We really enjoyed our month with him and now he his gone most of the time. He was fortunate to get into a class about corporate governance and will be going to Italy in March with the class. This is really exciting and he had to compete with a lot of people to get into the class. It's not only great because of the work that he will be doing, but because he gets to go back to Italy where he served his mission. He hasn't been back since then and is pretty thrilled about it.
In December David was called to be 2nd counselor in the bishopric. I'm really proud of the humble obedient man that I am married to. We were a bit nervous about how much time this new calling would take, but so far it has just kept him busy on Sundays and Tuesdays.
The most recent news with David is that he was chosen to be Editor in Chief of the Penn Journal of Business Law. David really wanted this position and worked hard to be considered. When they called to let him know they told him that it was unanimous after 7 seconds.

We feel so blessed and are loving our incredibly busy life!
